with Ben Askren, 2X NCAA Champ and 2X Dan Hodge Trophy winner from the University of Missouri
During his junior and senior year, none of Ben Askren's opponent's wanted to ride him. They chose the lesser of two evils and let him up for fear of getting thrown to their back for a 5-point move by one of his unique escapes. Now, Askren opens his `bag of tricks' and presents a number of creative wrestling techniques to add to your bottom position arsenal. Askren begins with his favorite escapes - the tripod. He details the proper position and demonstrates five different escapes. Askren teaches his elevator escape, which is good against an opponent who wants to chop the arm and also, how to escape from the crab ride, from leg defense, how to escape when the opponent hooks your ankle, plus, how to get away once you get to your feet; instead of a traditional 1-point escape, let Ben Askren show you how to get the fall!
with Mark Ironside; 2X NCAA Champion at the University of Iowa, 1998 Dan Hodge Trophy winner
Mark Ironside teaches you his "go to" escape that helped him earn two NCAA Championships - the Sitback Series. The Sitback differs from the traditional sit-out in that you are moving back into your opponent, which helps keep your hips underneath you and give you a better chance to control your opponent's hands. Ironside begins by showing the proper starting position, and then breaks down his Sitback, and includes a lesson on how to do a proper hip heist. Once the basics are covered, Ironside shows how to effectively execute the Sitback versus many common situations your wrestlers may find themselves in, including a 2-on-1, underhook, bar arm and more. This escape works well for those wrestlers who don't have that "explosive reflex" off the bottom. Ironside calls the Sitback series "a move that can make good wrestlers great!"
with Greg Strobel, former Lehigh University Head Coach, '04 NWCA "Coach of the Year"
A championship wrestler must be able to get away from his opponent. If your opponent is riding you, you're getting beat. Greg Strobel's four principles to escapes are good position, strong attitude, avoid handles and solve the problem. Starting with a discussion on proper position, Coach Strobel breaks down technique for three fundamental escapes: Rolls (including the Granby), switches, and stand-ups. He also shows how to "solve" the tight waist and spiral rides, as well as how to stop leg riders. This is an excellent DVD that will get your wrestlers to their feet and ready to attack.
Becoming a Champion Wrestler: Stand-ups - The Art of Coming Off the Matwith John Smith, Oklahoma State University Head Coach, 2006, '05, '04, '03 & 1995 NCAA Champions; 2X Olympic Gold Medalist and NCAA Champion
The stand-up is a high percentage escape that is very complex. The technique for the stand-up has to be good or you won't be able to get away from a good rider. John Smith begins with his philosophy on the move and some key points on finding a base position that is comfortable for you. From there Coach Smith demonstrates the inside leg stand-up - from the base position to getting away once you reach your feet. He goes step-by-step through the move, highlighting the key points as he goes along. From there he shows how to successfully hit the stand-up versus three common breakdowns - the chop, ankle pick and spiral ride. He also includes a stand-up variation for heavyweight wrestlers. Throughout the presentation, Smith calls on his brother, Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, (and former Arizona State University Head Coach, World Silver medalist and NCAA Champion) to complement his teaching points. Through this DVD, Coach Smith presents the key points to help you get off the mat quicker and make the stand-up your "go to escape."
with Mark Ironside; 2X NCAA Champion at the University of Iowa, 1998 Dan Hodge Trophy winner
Facing an opponent who rides the legs is a daunting task - it is imperative that you stop those attacks to get to your feet. Otherwise, your wrestlers will expend a lot of energy, and possibly lose a lot of points. In this demonstration clinic presentation, Mark Ironside presents his tips and philosophy for stopping leg riders. He begins with proper positioning, which is the first line of defense against leg riders. From there he covers different ways to prevent the leg from getting in, and how to counter different situations once the legs are in. He concentrates his presentation on two key points - hand control and hips underneath. Learning to stop leg riders is not easy. However, with these philosophies your wrestlers will be in good position to stop whatever comes their way!
