with Steve Miner, San Diego St. University Assistant Coach; former Madison (CA) High School Head Girls Softball Coach; 206-84 (.710) as a high school coach, 3X CIF Championships, 11X League Championships
Coach Miner introduced slap hitting at the national level in 1976. Miner's crossover-step slap hitting technique ignited a new trend in softball. Starting with footwork, Miner shares his coaching points on slap hitting. Starting in the back of the box, making a crossover step with the toe to the plate, and keeping shoulder and bat back are fundamental keys. To be an effective slap hitter, players must make contact with the ball at or behind the plate. Using live and slow motion video, Miner is able to show the proper techniques presented in this DVD. The drag bunt is also a focus of this presentation. Footwork and shoulder turn are similar, but the drag bunt is executed with one hand on the bat. Also discussed is "The Vig," a type of hit that is disguised as a bunt. Once the second baseman moves to cover first, the hitter strives to hit it into that hole by executing the Vig. Also included are drills and full pitch practice. Miner encourages future "slappers" to use these techniques to develop into an excellent hitter. The teaching in this DVD will show any team why and how to add slap hitting to your offensive attack this season!
