Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by American Indians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from the others, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and convey it into or past a goal to score a point. The cardinal rule in all varieties of lacrosse was that the ball, with few exceptions, must not be touched with the hands.
Early data on lacrosse, from missionaries such as French Jesuits in Huron country in the 1630s and English explorers, such as Jonathan Carver in the mid-eighteenth century Great Lakes area, are often conflicting. They inform us mostly about team size, equipment used, the duration of games and length of playing fields but tell us almost nothing about stickhandling, game strategy, or the rules of play. The oldest surviving sticks date from the first quarter of the nineteenth century, and the first detailed reports on Indian lacrosse are even later. George Beers provided good information on Mohawk playing techniques in his Lacrosse (1869), while James Mooney in the American Anthropologist (1890) described in detail the "[Eastern] Cherokee Ball-Play," including its legendary basis, elaborate rituals, and the rules and manner of play.

with Don Zimmerman, UMBC Head Lacrosse Coach; 3X NCAA Championship Lacrosse Coach
The Deuces lacrosse offense spaces the field well to create good dodging lanes from all four corners. Three sets of two players in lacrosse work together in pairs. Typically two players will be behind, two on top and two in the crease. A strength of this lacrosse offense is using the pick, where one player in the pair frees his teammate. This creates confusion and indecision in the lacrosse defense. By reading the defenders movement, the lacrosse offensive player can spring free of the defender. Another teaching technique is the front swing. Coach Don Zimmerman feels the game is all about deception, and the Deuce lacrosse offense is full of deception. The player with the ball is taught to sprint into, through, and out of the pick. Once out of the pick, the man with the ball heads straight to the goal with his stick in feeding position. The second pair is known as the inside men and key techniques are demonstrated to enhance their productivity in the Deuce. Inside men maintain balance by staying opposite of the dodger. The third pair is known as the men up top. When out front, all lacrosse players are always ready to score. By being inside the restraining line, these two players present a dangerous threat to the defense. The straight-line principle is a concept that can really help young players. The Deuces offense will get your lacrosse team high percentage shots while attacking from the inside and outside.
Shooting Technique & Drills for Championship Lacrosse Video/DVD
with John Danowski, Duke University Lacrosse Head Coach; 2007 NCAA Runner-Up; 2007 ACC Lacrosse Coach of the Year
A complete shooter in lacrosse has a variety of moves and can beat a goalie with a variety of shots on any given day. To help your players become complete shooters the staff at Duke demonstrates the finer points of the mechanics of shooting in this lacrosse video, shooting on the run and crease play. The video hits on key parts of shooting they hit on include front foot placement, hips, stomach, chest, shoulders and hands. A different skill is shooting on the run, which is likened to a lay-up in basketball. Players must develop the ability to jump off the inside foot to create space between them and the defender. Another term for "move to the ball" is "up the hash." This term describes a key skill for shooting and scoring and is also demonstrated. At Duke they teach the hands must be away from the body, called "kissing the shoulder." Players show this skill in the lacrosse "Swat the fly" drill. A move before shooting is the diagonal/back door to the cage. This lacrosse drill is demonstrated by Duke players live in practice during this lacrosse video. The next segment highlights the C cut and the fade cut. The pop and slip lacrosse techniques are also explained. The lacrosse skills and drills in this video DVD are important to all offensive-minded lacrosse players.

Through white board diagrams and practice footage, Coach Timchal describes the benefits of each as she shows you how to install each pattern into your system. The motion features the crease dodger, back door cut, clear space cutting, net drive, inside feed, inside shots and back side options. By attacking the left side, right side and behind the net, this offense puts great pressure on the defense to stop shots on the net. Timchal shares the Magic and Shark set out of the offense that can score vital goals at the end of the half. In addition, Timchal presents drills to help reinforce her instruction.
