with Jay Wright, Villanova University Head Men's Basketball Coach, NCAA "Sweet 16" (2005), Philadelphia Big Five Eastern College Coach of the Year
Aggressive, no-nonsense defense is a trademark of Jay Wright's teams. On this video you will see how Villanova's man-to-man defense is built from the ground up with on-court demonstrations and key drills. Because of the great talent Villanova faces every game, Wright focuses on drills that will help contain quick, skilled ball handlers. This excellent teaching tool progresses from individual defensive stance, to one-on-one, two-on-two, and three-on-three in the half- and full-court. Wright stresses pressure on the ball, stance and vision away from the ball. To counter the 3-point shot, the 2-on-2 Whack Out drill will show how to close out on shooters and still contain the ball handler. The term "line of the ball and level of the ball" are illustrated in the Wildcat's 2-on-2 full-court drill. The versatile 2-on-2 in the Post drill focuses on perimeter defense as well as defending the post. Helping on the post is a concept introduced once the offensive post has the ball inside. The cornerstones of the DVD are defending on the ball, jumping to the ball, playing cutters, playing off the ball and reading help. This has great application to high school and junior high basketball. The concepts drilled are fundamentally solid and time-tested ingredients that contribute to Villanova's defense prowess!

Legendary coach Pat Summitt brings a well prepared team to the floor every game. Her ability to get her team ready to play hard and execute is one of her many talents. Players must be informed about their opponent but not overwhelmed with information. The first item for players to lock into is the opponent's personnel. Knowing the offensive attack of the opponent includes their transition, primary man offense, sets, zone sets and out of bounds plays. On the floor, Coach Summitt's plan is to work on shooting drills, pressure releases, shell offense and defensive breakdown. The scouting report examines every defensive situation that could occur. Each player must know exactly what is expected in these situations. At the end of the shoot around, players will defend the opponent's out of bounds plays. During practice much of the activity is the same. On this DVD you will see practice drills such as; Post feeds, pressure releases, post double team, beating pressure with various cuts, shell offense featuring set plays, game shooting, free throws, defensive breakdown, post dive, main offense, baseline and sideline out of bounds.

with Pat Summitt, University of Tennessee Head Women's Basketball Coach; 2008 NCAA Champions - 8-time NCAA Championship Coach, over 950 career wins
Coach Summitt offers a unique look at pre-game preparation during a practice session with the Lady Vols. This presentation begins with offensive breakdown drills early in the practice. A variety of shots will be taken during several shooting drills. Defending the dribble drive is crucial for good man-to-man defense. Summitt feels this is the most difficult thing in team defense. This segment of practice includes many different drills. These drills include the close out, one-on-one defense, 2-on-2 defense, 3-on-3 defense, defensive rotation, turn defense and keeping out of middle. To emphasize the importance of defense, Summitt always makes a goal for the defenders in practice drills. Three consecutive box outs and defensive stops are the goal for the defensive half court drill. Shelling offensive sets come next in the practice plan. This will give coaches the opportunity to teach sets as they play. Added to this drill is defensive transition after a shot is taken 5-0. The next step is to play 5-on-5 with defensive transition. Putting things together, the next segment is scrimmaging against the zone defense. The workout ends with a shooting drill mixed with conditioning. Game footage shows Summitt's team executing the defensive game plan.

with Sherri Coale, University of Oklahoma Head Women's Basketball Coach, 2002 Final Four
In this insightful DVD, Coale discusses the importance of practice planning, drill consistency, using a positive approach and non-stop communication. By using the "echo technique" Coale's team repeats her instructions during the entire practice, keeping them all on the same page. On the court, the "North Carolina fast break" drill is an important activity in Sooner practices. This single drill requires players to listen, communicate, run, pass, catch, make lay-ups and fill spots on the floor. "Walking the arch" is another small detail that produces big results. This strategy is a technique used by cutters to get open using screens. Instead of using the V-cut, "Walking the arch" helps spacing on the perimeter and gets shooters open. Other techniques demonstrated include the slip screen, blocking out for better rebounding, post player techniques, the "fake a pass to make a pass" and the "X" passing drill, which emphasizes communication, squaring to the ball and making good passes. Offensively, Coale shares five pressure release options that are an important part of their motion offense. 12 Little Things That Matter will challenge your philosophy and give you some valuable nuggets for your program!
with Jay Wright, Villanova University Head Men's Basketball Coach, NCAA "Sweet 16" (2005), Philadelphia Big Five Eastern College Coach of the Year
Jay Wright is a big believer in developing an attitude for his teams at Villanova. His practices, especially the early-season, tone-setting practices, are a great example of this attitude and how he has instilled it into his Wildcat teams. In this DVD, Coach Wright will take you through an entire practice early in the season. Like all top-notch coaches, his practice is organized, energized, positive and enthusiastic. To emphasize the importance of shooting, all players work on a set-lift shooting technique prior to practice. After a quick 5-10 minute huddle at mid-court, a 30 minute segment includes 7 minutes of stretching, 4 minutes of passing, 9 minutes of shooting, 4 minutes of footwork, and 4 minutes of ball handling. This half-hour shows Wright's commitment to solid technique and fundamentals, which are part of every practice. Next are a series of small group drills with offensive and defensive emphasis. Drills include post feeds, lay-up drill, one two-step jumpers, jab series, and the lefty drill. Players are pushed and hard work is expected from the ever-positive Wildcat staff. Wright stresses communication between players and staff, which allows a strong bond to be built. Wright preaches good habits and a positive approach as he motivates his teams to elite status year in and year out. This practice showcases Villanova's philosophy with fundamentals, individual and team drills, and full-court play. Wright shows his coaching style by constantly praising and teaching his players during practice. An intense scrimmage puts it all together as practice concludes with "Win the Game", a team building free throw drill. Jay Wright's practice session combines all the ingredients needed for building a championship team every year!

Coach Vetter, USA Today's two-time national coach of the year, shares his time-tested strategy on practice organization. Vetter, with the help of nationally recognized strength coach Alan Stein, begins with a multiple exercise and stretching routine. From there he moves into the pre-practice segment, which stresses individual skill development and fundamentals. Form shooting, 1-2 step drill, 2-man shooting, motion cutting, give and go cutting and post up cutting are drills included in pre-practice. Vetter demonstrates drills for the fastbreak, secondary break, half court offensive sets and shooting. The defensive part of practice begins with stance and defensive slides. Pressure is a big part of defense and Vetter believes in full court pressure drills. All one-on-one drills lead to the shell drill in the half court. The next segment of practice is used for special situations. Vetter demonstrates out of bounds plays and special last second shot play. To end practice on a positive note, Vetter demonstrates "20 Baskets" - a fun, competitive shooting drill to wrap up the session. This DVD is a great example of a well-disciplined and balanced practice. By using some of the organizational framework you can use time wisely and take great strides toward success!

with Kevin Eastman, Nike Skills Instructor and Boston Celtics (NBA) Skill Development Specialist
Coach Eastman's work with Nike is about one thing - making players better. He works with NBA, college, high school and middle school players on the fundamental building blocks of the game. This DVD will stimulate your thinking and greatly improve your ability to enhance your players' skill. Eastman shares his six keys to a quality skill development program. First, practice at a rate equal to or faster than game pace. Second, skill development is a process to improve, involving many steps. The third key is to eliminate fatigue and boredom in your skill workouts. By changing drills and adding variety, a coach can keep a player's interest while still stressing fundamentals. A written workout program for players is the fourth key for successful workouts. The fifth key is to always work on conditioning, dribbling and shooting every day. The "theory of two" is a concept Eastman uses in his teaching. While it takes only two minutes to explain a skill, players must work everyday for two weeks to get comfortable with that skill. Then, it takes coaches two months to have to confidence to put that player in the game. He also explains the four "Must-Haves" in your drill work: Working on weak hand, footwork and balance, playing through contact and contesting shots are mandatory for each workout. Eastman places heavy emphasis on quality shooting workouts and shares his six keys to a quality shooting workout. He preaches that players practice "game shots from game spots at game speed." Eastman uses players to demonstrate his teaching points. Following a series of individual skill demonstrations, drill work is used to illustrate key teaching points. The unique "Argentine Olympic Drill" combines passing, conditioning and thinking. The Intensity Lay-up and Elbow Jump Shot Drill can increase quickness ball handling and scoring. Reverse Elbow Pick-up Drill teaches a player to be loaded and ready to shoot the ball. The Quick Square Drill is an excellent recognition and shooting drill for players at all ability levels. Coach Eastman proves that improvement comes only with focused, difficult practice. Fundamentals apply to the NBA player as well as the Middle School player. This ground-breaking DVD on skill development is creative, intense and opens a whole new world for those who want to become better basketball players.
with Tom Crean, Indiana University Head Coach; former Marquette University Head Coach; 2x Conference USA Coach of the Year; 2003 NCAA Final Four
The key to team success, chemistry and toughness is the tone that is set by the head coach. Coach Crean is a master at setting the tone and he shows you how in this DVD. The first key is coming to practice mentally prepared. Mental focus must be present when players hit the floor. He expects his players, coaches, managers and support staff to be ready to practice effectively with maximum effort. Secondly, positive energy is needed by players while coaches bring intensity and enthusiasm to every practice. The third element for setting the tone is to come in ready to compete, every second of practice. Crean's team demonstrates a variety of ball handling and shooting drills using cones and coaches as passers. Coming off down screens requires players to explode off the screen, use the inside pivot foot and "reach up" as they shoot. Moving into the full court, players work on 2-0 on ball screening situations. One-on-one close out drills become 2-on-2 as soon as the ball is in play. Full court transition drills require all players to concentrate and communicate in order to be effective. Crean concludes with a 25 point full court scrimmage and a 3 minute game that employ all of the techniques introduced in this practice session.
with Mark Gottfried, former University of Alabama Head Coach
No matter what level you coach, Mark Gottfried believes that practice planning is a key to success. Sharing his philosophy and drills, he demonstrates a typical practice at Alabama. Each practice begins with individual work, perimeter and post, on both ends of the floor. He shows two favorite warm-up drills - wing denial drill and the 2-on-2 close out drill. Each day he introduces a new concept when their minds are fresh and focused. In this segment, out of bounds plays and special plays are put together piece by piece. Gottfried moves to offensive concepts and demonstrates a wingback cut for a lay-up or a short bank shot. Defensively, shell defensive work is an everyday emphasis for 15 minutes. Because the drill has dozens of features to it, the drill can be changed for specific teaching each day. Flare screens, cross screens and down screens can be added for game preparation purposes. Every third day, Gottfried works on "Annie Over" and power lay-ins. This drill is a conditioner and demands good concentration. A toughness drill involves two players attempting to rebound the same ball and finish. This drill progresses to 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 with blocking out the focus. Gottfried shares a favorite shooting drill that is simple and produces lots of shots. This DVD presents an excellent mixture of belief systems, practice structure and practice ideas and drills!
